Supported by the Government of Canada, the Social Entrepreneurship Management (SEM) Training Program is one of the gender-sensitive capacity building programs of the Gender Responsive Economic Actions for the Transformation of Women (GREAT Women Project 2) of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW). The SEM program covers the following modules: self-mastery, the social entrepreneurial process, and the major management functions of a social enterprise.

Now on its second phase, GREAT Women Project 2 aims to train and accredit more SEM trainers in preparation for mass roll out. Given the magnitude of the beneficiaries, the women grassroots and community-based social entrepreneurs, it is crucial to train potential trainers who will cascade the knowledge to the direct beneficiaries to reach greater magnitude. With this, the SEM Training of Trainers Program was conducted by the Training of Professionals (TOP) unit of Bayan Academy from June 23 – 29, 2019 at Bayan Academy, Quezon City, Philippines. Through the seven-day program, Bayan Academy was able to accredit 20 SEM trainers[Office1] , composed of experts and professionals from government agencies, cooperatives and private sector from across the Philippines.
Mr. Blair Panong, senior trade and industry development specialist of DTI Region 7, shared that he was reminded that change cannot be done by one person alone, that it takes a collaboration of different people, private or government sector, to create a better society. He said that he was struck by the discussion on one of the three character traits of the social entrepreneur - “Alab ng Puso” or Heart Flame. He mentioned that the fire within each of the members of his batch of SEM trainers will surely drive them to give their best for their beneficiary social enterprises. At the end of the day, it is the trainers’ aim to see how these social enterprises and their beneficiaries have prospered.
During the culmination of the program, Mr. Roy Dimayuga, project manager of PCW, expressed his gratitude to everyone and shared his enthusiasm with the camaraderie built among the participants during the training program. Through the SEM Training of Trainers Program, he mentioned that they were able to acquire additional competence that equipped them in topics outside of their usual scopes of work. He hoped for them, that as they return to their provinces and communities, to continuously become sensitive to the women, their situation and needs, using the knowledge they have learned from the SEM training. He said that this is not the end, but only the beginning and that they are all together, as resource persons, in democratizing the gendered social enterprise management training to more people and communities.
